What This Site Records

This site keeps its own count of what is read. It carries no advertising and no tracker from an advertising or analytics company: the records described here go to this site’s own server and nowhere else.

When you open a page, the server notes the page, the date and time, the page that linked you here (when your browser says), your browser and kind of device, your screen size, language and time zone, and your IP address. From the IP address it works out roughly where you are, a city at best, using a database kept on the same server, so the address is not sent to anyone to be looked up.

It also notes how long the page was in view and how far down it was scrolled, and when a video or the narration is played, a photo is enlarged, a card is turned over, a file such as my résumé is opened, a link to another site is followed, or a share button is pressed. It cannot see what you go on to post.

Your browser keeps a few small notes for this site, in its own storage rather than in a cookie: a random number that stands for this browser, another for the current visit, and the last chapter you opened, so that the front page can offer to take you back to it. None of them says who you are. If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control” signal, the random numbers are not kept.

The records stay on this site’s server. I read them to see what is being read, and they are not sold or passed to anyone.

Links to other sites, such as YouTube, Apple Music, Spotify, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, open those sites, which keep their own records on their own terms. Nothing from them loads on these pages until you follow a link.

To ask what has been recorded about your visits, or to have it removed, reach me through the links under “Follow along” at the end of any chapter.
